Description

Jesmond Branch Library is a branch library built between 1962 and 1963, designed by Harry Faulkner Brown of Williamson, Faulkner, Brown and Partners. The building features a steel frame painted black and is clad with precast pink granite aggregate panels, while the administration block is constructed of grey brick. It has a flat roof and a circular plan for the main lending area, which showcases a "saw-tooth" arrangement of external windows and panels. This design allows light to reach the sides of the bookcases, which are integrated into the long edges of the serrations, backed by aggregate panels and topped with glazing. The entrance is recessed and fully glazed. This library is noted for its high standard of design, detailing, and finishes, elegantly occupying its corner site. It was awarded the RIBA Bronze Medal in 1965.
