Description
The Police Stables, located on Jesmond Dene Road in Newcastle upon Tyne, are early to mid-19th century stables and a lodge. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The main structure is irregular in shape and ends with a lodge at the eastern side. The stables consist of one and two-storey sections arranged in two parallel ranges. The main section has three wide bays, with a stable and hayloft above, and a round-arched entrance with voussoirs. Inside, the original horse boxes remain. The lower range is similar but is partially obscured by later extensions. The roofs are low-pitched and hipped on the main range, featuring corniced chimneys. The lodge, attached to the east of the main range, uses similar materials and is a single storey with two bays. It has a gabled porch facing the drive, which includes a three-panel door under an elliptical hood on the inner return, along with a bracketed oriel beneath the gable. The sash windows, which have late 19th-century glazing bars, are topped with flat stone lintels and have projecting stone sills. The lodge also has a low-pitched roof with a corniced central chimney.
