Description
Jesmond Dene Mill is a water mill and house located on Jesmond Dene Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. It dates from the early 19th century, although it may incorporate elements from an earlier mill. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and has no roof. It stands two storeys high with two bays, and there is a one-storey wall in front that once enclosed the mill race and wheel. The mill features a stone lintel above a square shaft hole, with renewed wooden lintels above square openings on each floor to the right. The left side of the building has a round stone-arched doorway. Inside, there are fragments of machinery. Historically, a mill has existed on this site since at least 1739, originally known as 'Mabel's Mill', and from around 1848 it was referred to as Heaton Mill. In the middle to late 19th century, it operated as a flint mill. Lord Armstrong purchased the mill in 1862.
