Description

Castle Farmhouse is a folly that was later converted into a farmhouse, built in the late 18th century. It features coursed squared sandstone with irregular large quoins and ashlar dressings, and has a rendered rear addition topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building stands 3½ storeys high and has 2 bays, designed in a Gothic style.

On the left side, there is a 4-light wood mullioned-and-transomed window, while the right side has a recessed segmental-headed arch that contains a tripartite stone-mullioned window and a lunette with wood mullions and transoms. Above this, there is a small casement window with a chamfered surround. The building is capped with a battlemented parapet, and the wall on the right juts forward, featuring a lower battlemented wall that aligns with the house.

The entrance is located on the left return, featuring a gabled porch with a stone arch and wood seats, leading to a boarded door. The upper floors have two square windows with chamfered surrounds and a blind panel below a pent roof, with a monopitch roof sloping down from the battlemented front.

Inside, there is one late 18th-century chimney piece with a cast iron grate, as well as another from the 19th century, also with an iron grate. Historically, this property belonged to Dr. Headlam, who resided in Jesmond Dene House across the valley. It was previously known as Heaton High Laws Farm, and later as Knox's Farm.
