Description
Tilston Cottage is a house dating from around 1810, built in the Regency Gothic style. It is constructed of rendered brick on a stone plinth, with a pitched slate roof that curves over the bowed front bays, and brick gable end stacks. The original house is a rectangular, three-bay structure to which double-gabled additions were made to the rear in the mid-19th century. The windows are metal casements with replaced leading replicating the original Gothic head detailing, and retain their original catches and stays. Some timber casements are also present on the sides of the house. The central front door has a pointed head with four rectangular panels and three glazed Gothic panels, accessed by two semi-circular red sandstone steps.
Inside, the hall features a double arch supported by a fluted central pier and moulded side pilasters. There’s an open string staircase with square balusters, moulded sides, and a reused Elizabethan bedpost used as the newel. Stone and black marble fireplaces with steel grates are present. The interior also includes fielded six-panel doors and a simple moulded beam on the ground floor at the rear.
