Description
The Smugglers Cottage of Tolverne is a cottage that was possibly originally built for fishermen. It dates from the 17th or 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. The cottage features slatestone rubble walls and a wheat reed thatched roof that is hipped to the left. There are rubble chimneys on the gable end to the right and on the gable end of the rear wing, as well as brick lateral stacks at the rear. The layout consists of a two-room plan with a two-room wing that forms an L shape, along with later infill in the angle. The building is two storeys high and has one window on the south front, which may have originally been at the rear. The nearly central doorway has a boarded door and a domed thatched hood above it. To the right of the door is a two-light casement window with 18 panes and one form of two hipped ends with a valley between. The later left wing is set back slightly. The interior has not been inspected.
