Description

Roseville is a small house built around the early 19th century. It is constructed from slatestone rubble, featuring granite quoins and brick arches with projecting keystones. The roof is made of asbestos slate and is swept lower to the rear, covering a continuous integral outshut. Brick chimneys are located over the gable ends. The house has a two-room central stair plan, along with two integral service rooms at the rear, and it stands two storeys tall.

The southwest front is symmetrical with three windows and a central doorway that contains the original four-panel door. There are shallow arches above the openings, and the original hornless 16-pane sash windows remain intact. Although the interior is noted to be the most altered among similar houses, it still retains much of its original carpentry and joinery. This includes a staircase with a turned bulbous newel, panelled doors, panelled cupboards, and original plaster canopy ceilings with curved angles.

Roseville is part of a group of four similar houses built under a three-life lease system, which allowed individuals to build homes on waste ground for a nominal rent, with the understanding that the property would revert to the original owner upon the death of the longest-lived of three selected persons. Leases could sometimes be renewed for a fee. The house is unspoilt and is situated in a harmonious architectural group, overlooking a beautiful and unspoilt stretch of Cowlands Creek.
