Description

Tolverne Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, which was remodeled in the 19th century. The building features slatestone rubble with granite ashlar on the south side, while the west side is rendered. The roofs are covered with asbestos slate and have gable ends, except for a hip on the south side of the main range. There is a rendered lateral stack at the front, a freestone lateral stack at the rear, a granite ashlar stack at the left gable end, and a rubble stack at the gable end of the roofless west wing. The plan is irregular and may have originally been U-shaped. The central part of the building now serves as a wing at right angles to the current front, which likely was originally the parlour wing. A later gable-ended wing runs parallel to the present front, filling the angle and obscuring the original fronts, with an additional service wing attached to the north-west corner.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The south front retains the impression of the original appearance, featuring one window and the hipped end of the left wing. There is a moulded mid-floor string course and a central four-light granite mullioned window with a king mullion and hoodmould on the first floor. The windows have small panes, and the central ground floor opening, altered in the 18th or 19th century, has a 16-pane sash with a cambered arch above, supported by granite voussoirs. The main west front has an irregular arrangement of four windows with horned 16-pane sashes. A two-storey porch mentioned in a previous listing description was not seen, and the rear and interior of the building have not been inspected.
