Description
Lower Trengrove Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, which was remodeled in the late 19th century. It features an extension to the south and an outshut added to the rear on the north side. The building is constructed of rubblestone with large base stones on the east side, topped with an asbestos slate roof that has gable ends on the northwest range. The south range has a slightly lower, cement washed scantle slate roof with some early, slightly crested ridge tiles. Rubblestone stacks with moulded granite strings and caps are present on the west gable end and on the west slope of the south range, with a similar stack at the junction of the two wings that has been removed.
The farmhouse has an 'L' shaped plan with a through passage running from the south to the north of the northwest range. The interior plan has been completely altered, with fireplaces blocked and a 19th-century staircase located at the junction of the two wings. The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window south front on the northwest range. The door is positioned to the right at the junction of the two wings, featuring a chamfered four-centred granite arch with moulded stops and a 19th-century plank door. To the left are two 20th-century windows, with two similar windows above.
The west front of the south wing is also asymmetrical with three windows. There is a 20th-century window to the left in a partially blocked opening, and a panelled and glazed door to the right beneath a wide slate string. Above this door are a 19th-century three-light casement, a 20th-century window, and a two-light casement without glazing bars. The south wing was extended in the late 19th century. The roof timbers have not been inspected.
