Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a chapel of ease built in 1905. It is constructed of rubblestone with cut stone dressings and features a slate roof with gable ends. The building is rectangular in shape, with a porch on the southwest and a vestry on the northwest. The south elevation has five lancet windows with cut stone dressings. To the left, there is a gabled porch with a chamfered two-centred arch that has decorative stops, and the gable end is adorned with barge boards. The east window consists of a triple lancet with a raised centre light. The north elevation includes three lancet windows and a tapered rubblestone chimney positioned between the first and second windows, with the vestry to the left beneath a lean-to roof. There is a shoulder arch and a plank door, along with two lancets in the west gable end. A timber belfry with a lower timber spire sits above the west end, featuring slate hung at the base and triple louvred openings on all sides, topped with a weather vane and weather cock.
Inside, the church has a simple design with exposed timber arched braces supporting the roof, resting on projecting moulded stone corbels. The chancel is sealed with timber boarding, and there are pitch pine benches. A 18th-century hexagonal pulpit stands on a moulded timber base, featuring fielded panels and a moulded cornice. The east window serves as a World War I memorial and includes coloured quarried glass. The church is included for its townscape value.
