Description
Gate Cottage, also known as Rosecraddoc Lodge, is a lodge to Rosecraddoc Manor that has been converted into a house. It was built in 1845 and has undergone few alterations since then. The building is constructed from greenstone rubble with granite dressings, and the front is rendered. It features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, and there is a front lateral stack, although its shaft has been dismantled. The layout consists of a two-room plan arranged in an L-shape, with the front room heated by the lateral stack. There is a small single-storey addition from the 20th century at the rear.
Architecturally, Gate Cottage is designed in an asymmetrical Gothic style. The single-storey structure sits on a plinth, and the front has an off-centre gabled bay to the left, which includes a canted bay with chamfered mullions for four lights that have diamond glazing. Above this bay is a datestone featuring a crest of a deer and arrow, along with the date 1845. To the left of the bay is a four-centred arched doorway with a door that has cover strips and studs, topped with a moulded granite hood mould. An external stack is located to the right. The left side of the building has two tall, narrow single lights with diamond glazing, while the right side features a large two-light window with diamond glazing and a hood mould, along with a recessed panel above that displays the same crest and date.
At the rear, there is a shallow wing to the left, which includes a shouldered arched doorway on the side and a blocked shouldered arched doorway at the rear of the main range. The rear gable end of the wing has a two-light window with a plain granite mullion and diamond glazing, partially obstructed by the small 20th-century addition. The interior has not been inspected. Gate Cottage is situated at the southern end of the drive leading to Rosecraddoc Manor.
