Description
Tutvale is a cottage that dates from the late 17th century, although it has undergone later additions and alterations. The building features painted roughly coursed slate-stone with a section of painted brick rebuilding on the right gable end, topped with a straw thatch roof. Originally designed with a two-room plan, it has been extended to the right, although part of this addition has been demolished.
The cottage stands two storeys high. The original section has two 19th-century casement windows directly below the eaves and one window on either side of a roughly central four-panel door, which is sheltered by a lean-to hood. There is a prominent external end stack on the left, which includes a fire window and a slate-capped semi-circular cloam oven projection. The slightly projecting lower end, which is part of the addition, features 20th-century casements designed in a 19th-century style on both floors. At the rear of the original part, there is a lean-to addition.
Inside, the left ground-floor room, which was formerly two separate rooms, has exposed joists, and the wide floorboards from the room above are visible. There is an open fireplace with a cloam oven, and a similar fireplace is located on the back wall of the lower end, which has a truncated stack. The original part of the cottage has a three-bay collar truss roof.
