Description
Horse Bridge is a road bridge over the River Tamar, built in 1437 with later repairs. It is constructed from roughly coursed slate stone, featuring mainly granite coping and dressings. The bridge has five spans, each with a hood-water arch on both banks, the one on the Cornish side being more sharply pointed. There are five tall cutwaters that rise to create triangular refuges at the parapets. The arches are slightly pointed and recessed, each situated below a chamfered moulding, with relieving arches above. Chamfered strings are present at the springing of the arches, and a chamfered string below the parapet wraps around the cutwaters, giving a slightly corbelled effect. On the north side of the bridge, the cutwaters have unusual stone corbels that may have been used for hanging salmon nets. There are also some putlock holes on the north side, likely used for timber structures to access the nets. Horse Bridge was financed by an indulgence granted to penitents who contributed to its construction and may have marked the lower limits of the Abbot of Tavistock's fishery. It is likely built by the same builder as Greystone Bridge in Lawhitton Rural Civil Parish.
