Description
This is a late 16th-century farmhouse, now divided, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of roughly coursed slate-stone with granite quoins and dressings, and has slate roofs. The main range runs north-west to south-east, with a south-west facing front, and is flanked by two cross-wings which create a small enclosed courtyard. A wall with an archway defines the north side of the courtyard.
The south-west side of the hall range features a through-passage to the right, with a projecting two-storey gabled porch in front of it. The porch has a two-light mullion window on the first floor and a moulded four-centred outer arch with hollow spandrels and a label. The inner arch is also four-centred, with hollow spandrels and a label, leading to a 20th-century diagonally boarded door with a glazed panel. There are 19th-century casement windows on each floor of the lower room, and a small two-light window immediately to the left of the porch. To the left of the centre is a section with a shallower roof, featuring a four-light 19th-century casement directly below the eaves and a similar six-light casement with a wooden lintel on the ground floor. A recessed area has a three-light chamfered mullion window on the first floor, and a late 18th-century slate-hung gabled porch with two monolithic granite Tuscan columns, leading to a six-panel door (upper panels now glazed) with a rectangular overlight. The projecting cross-wing has a tripartite horned glazing bar sash window on each floor, and a chamfered three-light mullion window to its left return. There is an integral granite end stack to the right of the cross-wing, with chamfered dripstones, and two granite ridge stacks to the left of the hall range, also with chamfered dripstones. A similar ridge stack is located on the cross-wing.
The rear courtyard side of the hall range has a chamfered Tudor-arched doorway to the through-passage. A chamfered two-light mullion window with a lintel breaking the eaves immediately to the right has an external lateral granite stack to the right, tapering to the top with a chamfered dripstone. A lean-to is set to the right, in the angle with a projecting range. The left projecting range is lower and possibly slightly later than the hall range. The ground floor has a chamfered two-light mullion window to the left, and a chamfered door surround to the right, with a small rectangular window above, directly below the eaves. An integral end stack with chamfered dripstones is on the left.
The attached wall, enclosing the courtyard, has slate coping and a projecting lean-to to the left end. It features a rendered granite four-centred chamfered archway with a wooden gate.
The interior was not accessible during a resurvey in 1987, but it is said to contain 17th-century panelling in one room, and likely other features of interest.
