Description

Addisford is a cottage located in Dolton, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with 20th-century additions. The building features plastered cob walls and a thatched roof, gabled at the original part and hipped at the right end of the extension. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the left gable end.

The original plan of the house remains largely intact, consisting of a larger heated room on the left, which serves as the entrance, and a very small service room to the right that includes a newel stair at the rear. The 20th-century additions include a single-storey extension at the right-hand end and to the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a regular two-window front featuring 19th-century or early 20th-century two-light casements, except for a 19th-century horizontal sliding sash window on the first floor to the right. All windows are in their original openings, with the right-hand ones being smaller. There is a 19th-century plank door to the right of centre, sheltered by a late 19th-century or early 20th-century open-fronted timber porch with a decorative barge-board on the gable.

Inside, there is an open fireplace with a concealed lintel and what is likely the original wooden newel stair in the right-hand room. The roof trusses consist of straight principals, with halved and pegged collate joints. This cottage is an unusual example of modest architecture that has survived in a very unaltered state, with only sympathetic 20th-century additions.
