Description

Vine Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century and further alterations made later. It is timber framed with painted brick infill and has slate roofs. The building has a two-cell plan, featuring a slightly later lower gabled addition on the left side. It is one storey and has an attic, with framing consisting of square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, and short straight tension braces. The right-hand gable end has been rebuilt in red brick. The windows are irregularly arranged, with mid-20th century metal casements, including three on the ground floor of the main section and a roughly central French window, as well as two similar casements on the gabled addition. There are contemporary flat-roofed dormers in the roof slope, two on the main section and one on the gabled addition. The entrance is through a 20th-century lean-to addition at the rear, although it was formerly located to the left of the main section, where a 20th-century casement has now been inserted. The cottage has an integral end stack to the right with a red brick shaft. Inside, the timber frame is largely intact, featuring a chamfered spine beam and heavy joists in the main ground-floor room, along with a wide inglenook fireplace. There are late 19th and 20th-century extensions to the rear and right that are not of special architectural interest.
