Description

Saplins Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century and further alterations primarily from the late 20th century. The building is timber framed with plaster and painted brick infill, topped with a machine tile roof. It originally has a two-cell plan and features an integral end stack on the right side, along with a slightly later catslide outshut at the rear. A brick extension was added on the right in the late 20th century.

The cottage is one storey and has an attic. The timber framing consists of square panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall-plate, short straight tension braces, and v-struts extending from the collar to the left gable end. On the left side of the original house, there is a three-light late 19th-century casement window, and to the right, there is a late 20th-century flat-roofed eaves dormer. The 20th-century addition, which is painted black and white to mimic a timber frame, includes a contemporary casement window on the right. The entrance is through a boarded door located immediately to the left of the ridge stack, which was formerly at the end of the building. The timber framed outshut has been partly rebuilt in early 20th-century brick. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
