Description

29 Walkmills is a cottage that has been incorporated into a larger house. It dates from the mid-17th century and has undergone alterations and additions in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with painted brick nogging, while the front wall has been rebuilt and extended in late 19th century brown brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The cottage consists of two framed bays with additional structures. It is one storey high with an attic. The framing includes square panels, with three sections from the sole plate to the wall plate, short straight corner braces, and scotches. On the south front, there are two eaves dormers, which were reconstructed in the 20th century, featuring two-light wooden casements and tile-hung gables. To the right, there is an integral brick end stack, a two-light wooden casement window, and two glazed doors to the left, one of which has a segmental head. The late 19th and late 20th century additions to the left are of no special interest. At the rear, there is a catslide roof over what is likely an early 18th century timber framed outshut. The right-hand gable end displays a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts.

Inside, the cottage has a timber framed cross wall, chamfered spine beams with ogee stops, and plain wide joists. There is a large open fireplace with a lintel and a 17th century ogee-headed chamfered doorway.

Despite the later alterations and additions, this cottage is recognized for its largely intact frame and its internal features.
