Description

Rose Cottage is a house that has been divided, likely dating from the 15th or 16th century, with alterations around 1600 and additions from the 19th century. It features a timber frame constructed in cruck style, with painted brick nogging, and the left-hand gable end is rendered and partly rebuilt in brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building consists of three framed bays, which are likely part of a former hall house. The framing includes square panels, with three extending from the sole plate to the wall plate. The house has one storey and an attic, with a gabled eaves dormer located off-centre to the left, featuring a two-light 19th-century wooden casement. There is an integral brick end stack on the left and a brick ridge stack off-centre to the right. The front has three windows, with two-light mid- to late 19th-century and 20th-century wooden casements, and a pair of boarded doors situated between the first and second windows from the right. Inside, there are two full cruck trusses with cambered tie-beams, and the central ground-floor room contains a chamfered spine beam and joists, along with a large open fireplace that has a chamfered lintel and a well-preserved bread oven. This interior arrangement suggests that it is likely part of a former hall house, with the central ground-floor ceiling and stack probably inserted into the former open hall around 1600.
