Description
The Leebotwood War Memorial is a churchyard memorial built in 1923. It is made of limestone and is situated at the junction of two gravel paths in the graveyard to the east of the Church of St Mary. The memorial takes the form of a Celtic Cross, featuring a wheel head on a pedestal with a stepped, square plinth.
The cross is constructed of ashlar and has a wheel head. The head and the tapered shaft are adorned with entwined Celtic knot decorations in sunken panels on the west face, while the east face and flanks remain blank. The pedestal has a domed top and a tapered body, with chamfered corners. The west face of the pedestal displays the inscription: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THESE PARISHES / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918 / ETERNAL REST AND PEACE GRANT TO THEIR SOULS O / LORD AND LET LIGHT EVER / LASTING SHINE UPON THEM.’ The names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed on the west face, while the names of those who died in the Second World War are on the south side. The maker's mark ‘W.JONES / SALOP’ is also inscribed on the plinth.
