Description

Castle Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with additions made in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame resting on a brick plinth, with painted brick nogging and extensions in painted brick with planted timbers, topped by a plain roof. The building has a baffle-entry plan consisting of two framed bays, with later additions to the left and rear.

The framing includes square panels, three from the sole plate to the wall plate, with the top panels divided and short straight corner braces. The farmhouse has one storey and an attic, featuring three large gabled full eaves dormers with three-light wooden casements. There is an off-centre brick ridge stack to the right, which was formerly central, and another brick stack behind the ridge, off-centre to the left.

The front of the house has three windows: a large 20th-century plate glass window in the left-hand addition, and a pair of three-light wooden casements to the right, flanking a probably late 19th-century timber-framed gabled porch with a panelled door. The right-hand gable end displays a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and v-struts.

Adjoining to the right is a one-storey timber-framed outbuilding with closely spaced uprights and a high sandstone rubble plinth, featuring a three-light window and a boarded loft door in the right-hand gable end. There is also a 20th-century flat-roofed addition to the rear of the house. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
