GV II

House. Mid- to late C16 with late C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Rendered timber frame, partly refaced, rebuilt and extended in painted brick; plain tile roof. Baffle-entry plan of 3 framed bays. Framing: square panels. 2 storeys with partial semi-basement. South-east front: painted brick ridge stack off-centre to left. 3-window front; C20 three-light wooden and metal casements, and small first-floor casement off-centre to left; C20 half-glazed door between first and second windows off- centre to left. C19 wing at rear with lean-to in angle; some timber framing visible at rear. Interior: largely complete timber frame including cross walls, posts with large jowls, and collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts; ground-floor room with chamfered ceiling-beam and joists; large open C16 fireplace invigorating reeded lintel with billet-decorated top edge; introduced C17 panelling with fluted frieze and introduced C18 wall cupboard with raised and fielded panel and L-hinges. Despite partial refacing and rebuilding of the front wall in the mid-C20 this house still retains almost all of its C16 frame and other internal features of interest. V.C.H., Vol. VIII, p.149.
