Description

The Bynords is a house dating from the mid- to late 16th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a rendered timber frame, which has been partly refaced, rebuilt, and extended in painted brick, topped with a plain tile roof. The building has a baffle-entry plan consisting of three framed bays and stands two storeys tall with a partial semi-basement.

On the south-east front, there is an off-centre painted brick ridge stack to the left. The façade includes three windows: 20th-century three-light wooden and metal casements, along with a small first-floor casement that is off-centre to the left. There is also a 20th-century half-glazed door situated between the first and second windows, again off-centre to the left. At the rear, a 19th-century wing features a lean-to in the angle, with some visible timber framing.

Inside, the house retains a largely complete timber frame, including cross walls, posts with large jowls, and collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts. The ground-floor room has a chamfered ceiling beam and joists, along with a large open 16th-century fireplace that has an invigorating reeded lintel with a billet-decorated top edge. There is also introduced 17th-century panelling with a fluted frieze and a 18th-century wall cupboard featuring a raised and fielded panel with L-hinges. Despite the partial refacing and rebuilding of the front wall in the mid-20th century, The Bynords retains almost all of its 16th-century frame and other notable internal features.
