Description
New Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-16th century, with a section added around 1600. It was rebuilt and remodeled in the early and mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame with painted brick nogging, and parts have been rebuilt in red brick, topped with a plain tile roof. It has an L-plan layout, consisting of two framed bays from the early to mid-16th century that run approximately east-west, with a two-bay wing added at right angles to the east around 1600.
The east front has an external brick end stack on the right and a brick ridge stack on the wing at the rear. There are three windows, which are late 19th-century wooden casements with two and three lights, featuring tumbled brick heads. The central entrance is a 20th-century half-glazed door with a four-part rectangular overlight, set within a brick porch that has a stone-coped parapeted gable. There is also a blocked gabled brick porch on the left-hand return front and a gabled timber-framed block in the angle at the rear.
Inside, the rear wing has chamfered beams and joists, and there are remains of a former external oriel window visible in the bathroom, complete with a moulded wooden cill and a carved scroll bracket. New Hall Farm is first mentioned in 1583 and was occupied by the Phillips family, who were lords of part of Smethcott manor, until 1662. The farmhouse is part of a complete farmstead group that includes a large barn.
