Description
Standish Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century and the 20th century. The structure is timber framed with painted brick nogging, partly rendered, and has been partly rebuilt and extended using painted sandstone rubble and brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The building features a hall range that consists of one framed bay plus a later bay on the right, and a projecting two-bay gabled cross wing on the left. The framing includes square panels, with three panels running from the sole plate to the wall plate, and long straight tension braces. The gable end of the cross wing has pseudo carved brackets at the first-floor level and a tie-beam truss with two collars, queen struts, and v-struts. The cottage is one storey high with an attic, which includes three 20th-century raking dormers on the right, each fitted with three-light leaded wooden casements. There is a large brick ridge stack at the junction with the cross wing.
On the left side, the hall range has a small 20th-century casement window, a small segmental-headed two-light sealed window in the later kitchen to the right, and a central rendered porch with a catslide roof. The front features a small segmental-headed two-light 20th-century wooden casement and a segmental-headed boarded door on the left-hand return. The cross wing on the left has three-light 20th-century leaded wooden casements on both the attic and ground floor.
Inside, the hall range contains a chamfered spine beam with plain stops, a large open fireplace with an ogee-stopped chamfered lintel, a bread oven with a cast-iron door, and a spit arm. The cross wing features a timber framed cross wall and a pair of chamfered beams with ogee stops. The roof has large purlins and straight wind braces. It is possible that the cross wing originally extended further to the rear, as the end bay is short, the back wall has been rebuilt in stone and brick, and the gable has been half-hipped. Standish Cottage was formerly known as Top House Farmhouse and is part of a small farmstead group that also includes barns to the west.
