Description

Rose Cottage and Old School House is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It likely dates from the 17th century and was extended in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame with painted brick infill, painted brick, and rubblestone casing, topped with machine tile roofs. It is designed in an L-shape, with a flush cross-wing (the Old School House) on the left and an extended former hall (Rose Cottage) on the right.

The structure is one storey with an attic. The timber framing is exposed on the Old School House, showcasing one rectangular and one square panel from the cill to the wall plate, along with long straight tension braces and V-struts from the collar to the front gable. The windows are irregularly placed, featuring one late 19th-century cast-iron latticed casement on each floor of the cross-wing, and three late 20th-century casements on the former hall—one to the left and two to the right of a roughly central entrance. Above, there are two contemporary flat-roofed eaves dormers. The building has an axial red brick ridge stack to the left of the hall range, with end stacks to the right and at the rear gable of the cross-wing. The entrance to the Old School House is located in the left return. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to retain the timber frame substantially intact.
