Description

This is a house, originally one building but now divided into two separate dwellings, at Nos. 2 and 3 Leighton Road. It likely dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, with significant additions and alterations made later. The house is timber-framed, with red brick infill and brick cladding. The base of the walls is roughly coursed, chamfered limestone, rendered to the front. The roof is covered in machine tiles, and there are external end stacks. The timber framing is visible on the rear wall, featuring close studding with a single middle rail. The front and left return sides are clad in 19th-century red brick, while the right return has been rebuilt in similar brick. The windows are mainly from the late 19th century, with cast-iron casements on the left and right sides of a 20th-century central gabled porch, which features a neo-Georgian door. No. 2 has 20th-century casements, also set on either side of a central 20th-century gabled porch with a half-glazed door. Inside No. 2, chamfered cross beams with run-out stops are visible, alongside heavy exposed joists. A late 20th-century two-storey gabled extension to the rear of No. 2 is not considered to be of significant architectural interest. No. 2 is also known as The Workhouse Cottage.
