Description

South Alston Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1694, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of rendered slate-stone and features a slate roof that is hipped on the left range. The main range likely has a three-unit plan with a through-passage to the far left. The section to the left of the entrance may either be an addition or a rebuilding of an earlier lower end. The building has two storeys and three widely spaced windows on the first floor, which are 19th and early 20th century casements, with the right window having left hinges. The ground floor has similar casements with five and four lights, respectively, in the centre and to the right. There is a 19th century half-glazed door with margin lights to the far left, which is sheltered by a 19th century open gabled timber porch that features a blind quatrefoil in the centre and smaller blind quatrefoils on the bargeboards. A datestone inscribed "NCD WD T 1694 B" is located above the right ground-floor window. The building has a ridge stack situated between the centre and right windows, and an external end stack on the left. The range to the left of the entrance has a three-light multi-paned casement directly below the eaves. At the rear of the main range, there is a catslide outshut. The interior could not be inspected at the time of the resurvey in December 1987, but it is likely to be of interest.
