Description
No. 1 Church Street is a town house with a shop that dates back to the early 17th century but was refronted in the mid to late 19th century. The front is finished in stucco on studwork, while the roof features a dry Delabole slate with a bracketed cornice on the front range and a rag slate roof on the rear wing. The building has a shallow tapered plan and stands three storeys high, with a one-window range and rusticated quoins on the upper floors.
The second floor has late 19th-century tripartite horned sash windows set within original moulded boxes, complete with a carved cornice hood and a moulded sill supported by brackets linked to a string course. The first floor features a late 19th-century four-light transomed canted oriel window with a moulded entablature and a moulded sill resting on a moulded stucco corbel.
On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century two-light shop front with 2-pane horned sashes, accompanied by a splayed sidelight to the left of the doorway, which has a two-panel top-glazed door and overlight. The shop front is adorned with pilaster sash boxes, an enriched frieze, and panelled end pilasters with consoles flanking the fascia, topped with a moulded cornice featuring round heads above the consoles.
Inside the rear wing, there is an early 17th-century chamfered granite fireplace with a fleur-de-lys panel, along with stubs of chamfered oak joists that have ball on bar stops. Some 17th-century fragments of a former mullioned window were removed prior to inspection.
