Description
No. 1 Market Street is a town house with a shop, built in 1853, as indicated by an inscription on the first-floor pediments. The building features stucco on masonry and a dry Delabole roof with an enriched modillion eaves cornice. It has a brick stack on the right and a cast-iron ogee gutter. The structure is designed in a classical style and consists of three storeys with a two-window range.
The original hornless sash windows and an early 20th-century shop front are notable features. The upper floors have rusticated quoins, with the second floor displaying paired four-pane sashes set within architraves over stepped sills with brackets linked to a stepped string course. The first floor features 12-pane segmentally-headed sashes positioned between pilasters, with consoles supporting open pediments that include dated cartouches. Moulded sills on brackets are linked to a sill string.
On the ground floor, rusticated granite ashlar piers flank the shop front and the house doorway, which is located on the right. The granite ashlar stall riser supports a double four-light transomed shop front with a wide splayed central doorway and sidelights. This entrance includes a pair of panelled glazed doors with a square overlight and slender moulded mullions with triangular heads. The house door is a four-panel top-glazed design with a two-pane overlight, and there is a plain full-width fascia.
Inside the shop, original shelves and a moulded cornice enriched with an egg-and-dart motif are present. This building is a remarkably complete example of a mid-19th-century town house with its original shop.
