Description

No. 42 High Street is an early 19th-century town house, later adapted for use as a shop. The building is constructed of stucco on studwork, with slatehanging to the upper portion of the left-hand return, and has a dry slate roof with a rendered stack set forward of the ridge on the right. It follows a double-depth plan with a substantial rear wing. The house is three storeys high and features a two-window front. Original 12-pane hornless sash windows remain. The ground floor has a mid-19th century cast-iron shop front, spanning the full width of the building and including end pilasters with consoles above a sloping fascia. The shop front has a central, canted window with quadrant sidelights, slender mullions, and basket-arched lights; the central mullion has been removed. A doorway is located on the left-hand side of the building with an overlight and a four-panel door. A shop doorway is on the right, with an overlight and a glazed door, and a quadrant light to its right. The interior of the building was not inspected.
