Description
Carnes Cottage is a building that contains shop premises with two shops and residential accommodation above. It was probably built in the 1860s as part of the rebuilding after a fire in this area. The exterior features stucco on studwork and an asbestos slate roof, with a rendered stack on the left and a brick stack on the right. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall, with a two-window range that includes original 12-pane hornless sash windows. The original six-light double shop front has end pilasters and a pelmet for a blind over the fascia. Tall basket-arched lights flank a splayed entrance that includes sidelights and glazed shop doors, along with a central four-panel house door that has flush bottom panels. The interior of the shops is plain, and the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
