Description
No. 49 High Street is a late 18th-century town house, subsequently adapted with a shop. It is constructed of brick on a rubble base, with flat arches featuring wooden keyblocks and slate hanging to the rear. The roof is steep, covered in slate, with a modillion eaves cornice. A rear outshut has two hipped dormers. The building follows a double-depth plan and rises three storeys over a basement, originally with a three-window front. Early 19th-century hornless sash windows with 12 panes are present. The doorway, located to the right of centre, has an 18th-century six-panel door with fielded top panels and flush bottom panels. A late 19th-century shop front occupies the left-hand side, featuring end pilasters, a low-profile fascia, and a sidelight to a recessed doorway with a glazed and panelled door. The rear of the building has four older 16-pane sashes. The interior of the property has not been inspected. Group value context: the property contributes to the character of the High Street.
