Description
No. 8 Market Street is a mid-19th century shop with living accommodation above. The front is finished in stucco on a studwork frame, topped with an asbestos slate roof that features deep eaves supported by paired brackets. There is a truncated rendered stack on the left side and a shared rubble stack on the right, which is external to the slate-hung gable of No. 6. The building has a deep plan and stands three storeys tall, with a two-window range that includes 20th-century windows. The ground floor boasts a complete mid to late 19th-century six-light double shop front set on a granite ashlar stall-riser. It has a splayed central doorway flanked by sidelights and a pair of glazed doors. The design includes slender column mullions with caps, end pilasters, and a fascia adorned with modillions beneath a moulded cornice. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
