Description
No 17 is a 2-storey thatched cottage made of brick, likely dating from the 17th century. It is four windows wide and serves as the lower eastward extension to New House. The cottage features a gabled porch with scissor braces on brackets, which probably dates from around 1850. There is a stringcourse present, and the windows are mostly casement style, with three lights each. The central opening light has a thicker frame and one window features massive hinges. The glazing is diamond lattice and leaded.
The east gable has a large chimney breast with three set-offs on one side, topped with a stack that has a brick cornice and a higher extension. There is also a secondary chimney on the ridge. The rear (north) side of the cottage has an asymmetrical projection.
No 16 (New House), the New House stable, No 17, and Magdalen Cottage on Holdenhurst Road together form a group.
