Description
No 20 High Street is a cottage with two building periods from the late 17th century. It features a timber frame that is plaster rendered, sitting on a brick and clunch plinth, topped with a long straw thatch roof and a red brick ridge stack. The cottage has a single range and a lobby entry plan, consisting of one storey and an attic. There are three dormers, two of which have gables, and the windows include horizontal sliding sashes with small panes. On the ground floor, there are four windows, including a 19th-century horizontal sliding sash, and a 19th-century panelled door leading to the lobby entry.
To the east, there is a bay that is likely a late 17th-century addition, which is also framed and plaster rendered. The studwork of the original east gable and wall was partly renewed when this bay was added. Inside, there are contemporary clunch and red brick inglenook hearths. One ground floor room features run-out stop-chamfered joists, while another room likely has a ceiling that was inserted later. The original house is divided into three structural bays, with a narrower bay for the chimney, similar to No 48, West Green. The later 17th-century bay was used as a butcher's shop. This cottage, along with other cottages on the north side of the High Street, forms an encroachment on the Green that likely began around 1650.
