Description
30A Monmouth Street is a corner terraced house and shop, dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It was originally part of a group of four matching shops designed in the Greek revival style (30A, 31, and 32). The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof.
The main entrance is located on Princes Street. The exterior consists of three storeys with three windows and a single bay return to Monmouth Street, with the corner taken in a tight quadrant. All windows are glazing bar sashes, with a configuration of three/six panes above six/six panes. On the Princes Street front, there is one sash window at ground level on the left, a central pair of panelled doors beneath a transom light, and to the right, an original eight-pane display window set in pilasters that returns to the quadrant corner, with doors on the splay and a larger 20th-century display window facing Monmouth Street.
A flat end giant Doric pilaster supports an entablature with a frieze, moulded cornice, and a blocking course with a parapet on the first floor, with dies featuring pedimented caps above the pilasters. There is a stack to the left and another to the right on the return. The interior has not been inspected.
This building is part of a carefully detailed terrace that includes Nos 1 and 1A Princes Street and Nos 31 and 32 Monmouth Street.
