Description
31 and 32 Monmouth Street are two terraced houses with shops, built in the early 19th century and featuring later 19th and 20th-century alterations. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and have slate roofs. The buildings rise three storeys and have three windows, all of which are sash windows. The first floor has three two-over-two pane sashes positioned above three three-over-six pane sashes. The ground floor of No.31 features a 20th-century shopfront with a recessed door on both the left and right, while the original shopfront is located under the original entablature. The shopfront of No.32 dates to around 1830. The upper floors are adorned with three giant Doric pilasters on a plinth band, which support an entablature with a frieze, blocking course, and parapet. Above the pilasters are dies with pediment cappings, and the last bay on the right is narrower, featuring raised blocking and a recessed segmental arch just above the cornice. There are deep stacks on both the left and right sides. No.32 has a three-quarter glazed door with a shutter recess and a partially glazed door shutter that is fixed in position, making it a rare survival in the Bath context. The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of a carefully detailed terrace that also includes No.30a and Nos 1 and 2a on Princes Street.
