Description

No. 1 Griffin Inn is located on Princes Street and has a return frontage to Monmouth Street. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, although the Monmouth Street range may be older, possibly built after 1776. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar, some of which is painted, and it has slate roofs.

The main structure facing Princes Street is three storeys tall with a basement and features two windows. It has large plain sashes, with a paired sash on the left at the ground floor. The central entrance consists of a panelled door set within a plain surround, and there is a larger chimney stack to the right. The Monmouth Street section is a parallel three-storey building, also made of painted ashlar. It has two small plain sashes on the upper floors above a tripartite plain arrangement at the ground floor, which includes two large four-pane windows flanking a panelled door with a very shallow transom light.

On the return side to the right, there is a sash window above a square display window with an architrave and surround, and a small sash window on the first and second floors. The building features two platbands, a small cornice with a blocking course, and a parapet. There is a large chimney stack to the left, a cropped stack to the right, paired coped gables, and a stack at the rear eaves. The interior has not been inspected.
