Description

Claverton Buildings consists of two terrace houses, now functioning as shops, built in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with a 20th-century addition. The buildings are made of limestone ashlar, with No. 18 painted, and feature concrete tile roofs, although some areas at the rear have slate and tile.

No. 17 is three storeys tall with a basement, while No. 18 has two storeys, an attic, and a basement. Both houses have plain sash windows; No. 17 has two sash windows on the second floor and a small two-light dormer above a single sash and a pair of sashes on the first floor, along with shopfronts at ground level. The entrance to No. 17 features a part-glazed six-panel door on the left and an early 19th-century square bay shopfront with modern windows and a door. No. 18 has a fielded six-panel door with a three-pane transom light on the right and an early 20th-century pilaster shopfront with a recessed central door.

A moulded cornice spans the width of both buildings, with a cavetto cornice, blocking course, and parapet above the raised floor of No. 17, while No. 18 has a blocking course with a parapet above its mansard roof. A large shared ashlar chimney stack is located at the party wall.

At the rear, No. 17 features two twelve-pane windows on the top floor, with paired and single sashes on the first and second floors, and a paired sash window with a door leading to the basement. No. 18 has a paired plain sash dormer above a small canted bay with plain sashes on two floors, while the basement floor is not visible. There is a small yard and a two-storey cottage addition. The interiors have not been inspected.
