Description

No. 21 Claverton Buildings is an early 19th century shop with living accommodation above, with an addition to the roofline made in the mid-19th century. Ordnance Survey records indicate construction before 1830. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with rubble at the rear, and has a slate roof with a pantile section at the rear.

The plan is a double-depth design with a steeply pitched roof and two chimney stacks on the right. The building has a ground floor shopfront from the late 19th century, replacing an earlier one. The shopfront includes a three-light window with narrow timber mullions over a stone stallriser, with a fascia above. A glazed shop door is located to the left of a panelled house door, which has two glazed panels, positioned to the left of the shop door. The first floor features a sill course and a tripartite sash window with plain glazing in each section. A listel and frieze runs along the facade, above which is an attic addition with a matching window. A cornice tops the building, followed by a parapet. The roof is not visible from the front, and there is an ashlar chimney stack on the right.

The rear elevation clearly shows the heightening of the building, with ashlar construction above a rubble base, and an eight-pane sash window above a six-pane sash. Slate hanging is used on the gable wall. The interior has not been inspected. The building was originally part of a terrace, which has since been altered in various ways.
