Description
Claverton Buildings, No. 15, is an end terrace house located on Claverton Street. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double Roman tile roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with two windows on the front. There is a small paired sash lead-covered dormer in the mansard roof above twelve-pane sashes, which are set above a sill band at the first floor. The entrance features an original six-panel, part-glazed door beneath a slab hood supported by brackets, positioned to the right. A head of the basement window is visible in a small plinth, along with a pavement grille. The building has a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet, with a large two-stage ashlar chimney stack on the left side.
The rear of the building is also finished in ashlar and has a double Roman tile mansard roof. It includes a hipped paired sash dormer above a canted three-storey bay with twelve-pane sashes set into broad stone corner mullions. A narrow vertical strip of glass has been inserted into the two top levels. There is a door to the left at the lower ground level, and a full-width coved cornice is located below the blocking course and parapet.
The interior has not been inspected. Originally, Nos 8-15 were part of one terrace, with Nos 8 and 15 slightly stepped forward to mark the ends. No. 15 is noted as being the least altered of these properties. Some sources suggest that No. 15 may predate the rest of Claverton Buildings, as a structure is indicated on this site in a 1755 survey of the Manor of Hampton by Thorpe, and it features the only pediment in the row.
