Description
Claverton Buildings, located on the north side of Claverton Street, consists of two terrace houses that have been converted into shops. These buildings date from the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. They are constructed from limestone ashlar with concrete tile roofs and are double-depth houses with a central valley.
The exterior features two storeys and a basement, which reveals a full three storeys at the rear, with each house having one window. The first floor has tripartite plain sash windows. No. 22 features a pilaster shopfront with a glazed door to the left, topped by a shallow fascia with a cornice. No. 23 has a wide plate glass front with a glazed shop door to the left and a panelled door to the right, all beneath a late 20th-century plastic fascia. Both buildings have glass block pavement lights above the basement windows, a small plinth, a lintel with a frieze, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet. The central party division has very tall ashlar stacks at each ridge. The rear of the buildings includes some twelve-pane sashes, including stair lights and a door to the basement.
The interiors have not been fully inspected, but No. 23 was examined by Bath Council in 1981. It retains an original staircase with newels and a cut string, and the first-floor front room has a triple window along with four-panelled low cupboards in the alcoves on either side of the fireplace. The cornice continues to Nos 20 and 21 on the left and No. 24 on the right, suggesting that this pair was part of an original terrace of five or six houses.
