Description

No. 6 with railings is a terraced house dating back to approximately 1730, designed by John Strahan. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with rubble at basement level, and has a pantile roof. The house is likely part of a longer original frontage that has been subsequently modified or rebuilt, relating to Nos. 6 and 7. It is a small house, two windows wide, with four-pane dormers in the roof. There are eight panes in the ground and first-floor windows. A fragmentary pulvinated frieze with a corniced hood remains at ground floor level, with a two-light casement in the splay of the basement. A six-panel door is contained within an architrave and topped with a segmental pediment resting on fluted pilasters with consoles. An opening at a low level allows access to a diagonal passageway with a further door. The building has a full entablature with a triglyph frieze. The interior has not been inspected. Railings on a stone curb enclose the basement area, returning to the doorway on a stone landing. The house shares similarities in detail with Nos. 2-4 on the opposite side of Beaufort Square, although it has undergone some modifications and is on a smaller scale. It was built as part of the 1727 development of Beaufort Square by John Strahan, intended to create a distinct architectural style from that of John Wood. This development is an important episode in the growth of Bath and contributes to the area’s group value, particularly in relation to the Theatre Royal.
