Description

EAST STREET (North Side) Nos 5 and 6 SU 8604 NW 4/457 II

Late Cl9 building. Late Gothic style. 3 storeys and attic. 5 bays. Gables over end and centre bays with 1 window in each. Stone coursed. Carved bands above 1st and ground floors. 1 2 sided 5 light bay projecting through 3 storeys at western end; on 2nd floor in other bays, windows of 1 tier; windows of 2 lights in 2nd, 3rd and 4th bays from west, 4 lights in easternmost bay. On 1st floor; oriel windows in 3rd and 5th bay from West. 2 tiers of 4 and 5 lights respectively; gargoyles above windows; crenellated parapets. In 2nd and 4th bays on lst floor, windows of 2 tiers with 2 and 4 lights respectively; windows with square heads, and dripstones over. On ground floor, 3 windows including 1 large 7 light window to east. 2 4 centred arched doorways, easternmost doorway set in square headed archway with decorated spandrel. Nos 5 and 6 were built on the site of the former Swan Inn.
