Description
Nos. 83 and 83A on North Street are a building originally dating from the early 19th century, featuring a front that conceals an older timber-framed core, which was once visible in a passageway to the north. This passageway has since been filled in and incorporated into the shop, with the wall above it rebuilt and a modern shop front added at ground level. The front above the ground floor is primarily what remains of the original structure. The building stands three storeys tall with a slate roof and a large modern eaves cornice decorated with modillions. The façade is made of red brick and includes three windows, which are sash windows set in reveals with flat arches, retaining their glazing bars and painted brick voussoirs. The first floor features double sash windows. This building is part of a group that includes the Market House, Technical Institute, and Nos. 83 to 87.
