Description
Nos 86 and 87 on North Street are a Grade II listed building dating from the 18th century and early 19th century, featuring a stuccoed front that conceals an earlier timber-framed structure. The building stands three storeys high with an old tiled roof that has a much less steep pitch compared to the adjacent Nos 84 and 85, resulting in a higher frontage. It has an eaves cornice adorned with modillions and two windows on each floor. The sash windows, which have flush boxes, are present on all floors except for the northernmost second-floor window in No 86, where thick glazing bars remain intact. Notably, the first-floor front rooms boast a fine plaster ceiling dating from the 16th to 17th century, which contributes to its Grade II designation. The interior also features panelling, while the ground floor has modern shop fronts. This building is part of a group that includes the Market House, Technical Institute, and Nos 83 to 87.
