Description
Nos 84 and 85 on North Street are 18th century buildings with a front that conceals an older timber-framed structure. They feature an old tiled roof that is steeply pitched, with a higher ridge line than the adjacent No 83. The buildings have three storeys and an attic, with a lower frontage compared to No 83. There is a small chimney stack at the north end of the roof and another stack at the south end. Above the south end of No 85, there is a flat-roofed dormer. The eaves have a moulded cornice with modillions.
There are four windows in total; No 85 has sash windows with flush boxes and intact glazing bars on the second floor, while the other windows are missing. Above the first-floor windows of No 85, there are window blind covers. No 84 features a 20th-century plate-glass shop front, while No 85 has a later 19th-century shop front. Inside, there is visible panelling and timber-framed construction, and it is said that the buildings were constructed on the site of a medieval church. There are also traces of a passageway with a medieval stone arch in the cellar.
Nos 83 to 87 form a group with the Market House and Technical Institute.
