Description
12 Church Street is a house that has been converted into commercial premises, dating from the second half of the 16th century and altered over time. The building features a timber frame with later brick infill, a front made of 20th-century brick on the ground floor, and rendered above. It has a plain tile roof and a central smoke-bay plan. The structure is two storeys tall with a gable end facing the road and consists of three bays. There is a 20th-century shop window to the left of a recessed late-19th-century half-glazed door, which has a lower panel that is raised and fielded. A fascia board is flanked by late-19th-century fluted consoles. The first-floor window has five lights with casements, and the second light features an old iron frame and hinges. The rear of the building exposes the timber frame.
Inside, there are jowled wall posts, arched braces, and large scantling beams. The roof includes queen-post trusses and wind braces. The timber framing resembles that of the adjoining property, No 10, suggesting that No 12 may have originally served as a cross-wing to No 10.
