Description

This building, located at 10, 10A and the flat above Church Street in Godalming, is a house that has been converted into two shops and a flat. It dates from the 16th century, likely from the second half, and was refaced in the 19th century, with further alterations for 20th-century shopfronts. The structure features a timber frame with brick infill, some tile-hanging, and rubble-stone, while the front is finished in painted brick arranged in Flemish bond. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The ground floor has two shop fronts on either side of a central recess that contains three doors. On the first floor, there are three two-light leaded casement windows beneath cambered arches made of stucco, each with fluted terracotta keystones. There are end stacks located in the front roof pitch.

At the rear, the timber frame is arranged in rectangular panels with arched braces, and part of it is tile-hung. There is a stack near the eaves on the right side, and an added wing on the left that is not of special interest. The right return features a ground floor made of painted rubble-stone, while the first floor showcases arch-braced timber framing.

Inside, the timber framing is exposed on the first floor, displaying arched wind braces and closely spaced tie-beam trusses at the center, with the right truss featuring queen posts and a collar. The central, narrower bay was likely originally used as a smoke bay.
