Description

Nos 7 and 9 Church Street are three houses that have been converted into two shops. Originally built in the 17th century, they were largely rebuilt in the late 18th century and have undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some timber-framing, and feature plain tile roofs. They are two storeys high and consist of one bay on the left that steps up the hill and three bays overall.

The shop fronts, which date from the 19th century, include three entrances. The left bay has a half-glazed door with a fanlight, while the right bays have paired doors with six panels, one of which is now half-glazed, and blind overlights. Decorative elements include pilasters, friezes, and a dentilled cornice above the right-hand bays, along with a canopy box and cornice on the left-hand bay. On the first floor, each bay has a 16-pane sash window set in a reveal with a flat brick arch; the right-hand window has a replacement arch, and there is a blind window above the right-hand door. The parapet has been rebuilt and features flat coping. Brick chimney stacks are located at the right end and to the rear of the second bay.

At the rear, there are wings on both the left and right sides, with a small-pane window serving No 7. Inside No 9, there is a square-panelled timber-framed former rear wall with brick infill, a large chamfered cross-beam, and old joists, along with some exposed timber-framing on the first floor and a chamfered cross-beam with a lamb's tongue stop.
